[TEASER] Sony Animation’s Vivo goes Netflix

Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are proud to present the one and only Vivo! The deadline broke the news that the streaming giant has acquired the worldwide rights (excluding China) to the Caribbean musical from Sony Animation. Sony Pictures, however, will still retain the home media and linear television rights to the film.

Although Netflix has yet to set a new release date for Vivo, they gave us our first glimpse with a trailer, which introduces us to the titular kinkajou and his wise owner Andrés (voiced by Juan de Marcos González of the Buena Vista Social Club). Voicing Vivo himself is none other than Lin-Manuel Miranda, the acclaimed songwriter behind Hamilton, In the heightsand disney Moana.

When tragedy strikes Andrés, Vivo sets out on a dangerous journey from her home in Havana, Cuba, to Miami, Florida, in order to deliver a special song to Andrés’ former musical partner Marta Sandoval (Gloria Estefan of Miami Sound Machine). Vivo will also have to team up with energetic Tween drummer Gabi (Ynairaly Simo from Creative galaxy) in order to cross between the two lands of great distance.

Two iconic Marvel’s actors Guardians of the Galaxy also lend their vocal talents in Vivo, with Zoe Saldana as the mother of Gabi, Rosa, and Michael Rooker as Lutador the evil python. Brian Tyree Henry (Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse), Nicole Byer (Snoopy in space), Leslie David Baker (Puppy Dog Pals), Katie Lowes (Wreck-It Ralph), Olivia Trujillo (For all mankind) and Lidya Jewett (Good girls).

What was at one point an abandoned DreamWorks animation project, Sony relaunched Vivo in full force in December 2016, being written by Miranda Quiara collaborator Alegría Hudes and film director Kirk DeMicco. DeMicco is because known for directing / writing Vanguard Space chimpanzees and Oscar nominee from DreamWorks The Croods (alongside Chris Sanders). Brandon Jeffords, responsible for history for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, co-director alongside DeMicco.

Vivothe producers of will consist of Turbo producer Lisa Stewart, Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania producer Michelle Wong, and Wreck-It Ralph/Zootopia director Rich Moore. Miranda and her conductor Alex Lacamoire create the painting, the latter will compose the score of the film. Animation services were provided by Sony Pictures Imageworks.

Vivo will be one of four Sony Pictures animated films to release in 2021, and one of three to release on Netflix with The Mitchells against the machines (streaming now) and Dragon wish (released on June 11). Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, the fourth and final entry in Sony Animation’s monster franchise, is still set for theatrical release on July 23.
