Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro will be presented at the Netflix Animation Festival

At Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is one of the upcoming selections to be unveiled during Netflix’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The showcase will take place June 13-18 in Annecy, France, Variety has confirmed. The inaugural event is seen as proof of Netflix’s support for anime projects. Details about the festival are released shortly after the streamer canceled production on other animated projects, including Meghan Markle’s. chime.

Audiences will be among the first to view footage of del Toro’s stop-motion musical Pinocchio. The acclaimed director will attend the event and host a discussion about the project. by Del Toro Pinocchio is based on the 1883 novel by Carlo Collodi and is set during the rise of fascism in Italy. Pinocchio is part of a multi-year deal between Netflix and del Toro that grants him creative freedom to write, direct and produce feature films and series. The cast voicing the characters includes Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton and Cate Blanchett.


Del Toro is a creative consultant for Dreamworks Animation and has worked as a producer on feature films including Puss in Boots, Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans and Kung Fu Panda 2. He is the creator of the Tales of Arcadia franchise.

Audiences will also get a first look at Kid Cudi (Grammy Award-winning musician Scott Mescudi) and Kenya Barris. Entergalactic. The animated series is based on Kid Cudi entergalactic album, which has not yet been released. Barris is a writer, producer, director and actor best known for creating Blackish, and its two spin-offs Mixed and Cultivatedand for playing and developing Netflix #BlackAFagainst Rashida Jones.

Netflix’s Annecy Festival will also include the world premiere of Sea beast. The sea monster adventure, which features a young girl befriending “the most dangerous beast of all”, is written, produced and directed by Chris Williams. The cast includes Karl Urban, Dan Stevens, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Zaris-Angel Hator, Jared Harris and Kathy Burke.

Other features and events taking place during the multi-day festival include a behind-the-scenes look at David Fincher’s first animated film bad trip (featured in Love, Death + Robots Volume 3); A festival competition including Arcane, The Cuphead Show!, Home, Human Resources, Robin Robin and We the people as official selections; and a masterclass on the power of inclusive storytelling presented by Chris Nee (Doc McStuffins creator) and Karissa Valencia (Spirit Rangers Creator).

Pinocchio and Entergalactic are both slated for Netflix releases later this year.
