Flea markets: a task, an art, a hobby, a pleasure

Not everyone can appreciate the skill it takes to unearth a good flea market find. It takes real effort.

Determining where the flea markets are located in the world is paramount. Then comes driving all over creation to reach them. Combing through table after table of scraps and trinkets, disorganized trash and trash from vendor to vendor comes next. The patience of searching for an object is not everyone’s favorite pastime. But it is mandatory.

Is this item in your price range? Can you haggle? Etc., etc. Flea markets are a far cry from a sterilized environment with new items sorted by size, with multiples of the exact same product in many colors. However, if you want a piece of history, a one-of-a-kind item, something that has been weathered and enjoyed over the years, then flea markets are perfect for you.

Flea markets can range from very expensive to incredibly cheap. The price depends entirely on the attachment and value of a collector who, although presumably selling items in a market, may or may not want to sell their items. Merchants may or may not put price tags on their items.

The value is determined by the transaction between the seller and the buyer. Either you can come to an agreement or you can’t. That’s life. Let’s move on to the next table if the offer is not accepted or the seller does not move.

It is a task, an art form, a hobby and a pleasure for some and a tiring waste of time for others.

Over the years I have honed my skills. Rusty things are my jam. Your garbage is my great find. I love a good flea market!

My fondness for a cheap flea market may have something to do with the fact that my house is 200 years old. The new objects just don’t look good in a house with wooden beams and rooms that lead from one to the other in a weird web with no right angle to find.

Visitors who don’t understand the value of an old house often say something like, “It certainly has a lot of character. Yes, he has character. Objects that are made by the thousands do not look inside. Even new items made to look old appear inauthentic in my home. My house calls for authentic, 200-year-old stuff. |

I don’t have the money to walk into a fancy antique store, throw in $500, $1000, $2000, $5000 less and buy the items on display so perfectly that I drool at the sight of them. However, I like to find similar items at a fraction of the cost by doing the work.

And so the hunt begins.

High Falls Flea Market

This market, like the hamlet of High Falls itself, is small, quaint and cute. The flea market is in a little corner on route 213 in the middle of town. History surrounds it with the upgraded opening of the D&H Canal Museum this summer just steps away. It seems fair to spend some time looking for an old, perhaps historic, object in such a setting. It is open Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from the second Saturday in April to the last Sunday in October. www.canalmuseum.org/market

Original outdoor flea market at Newburgh Vintage Emporium

There are two huge warehouses: the original Vintage Emporium and then, added a few years later, the Warehouse Vintage Emporium. Each location is gigantic. Special items can be researched on any day. They have now added an outdoor flea market to the game, vendors in the fresh air.

They boast over 30 vendors, including “vintage, antiques, local makers, and food trucks!” The plan for the day might be to fill up at the food truck and then go around the maze of tables. It looks like an awesome day. There are only a few dates, so write them down: June 18, September 10, October 15, 2022. The market is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each of these days. The address is 5006 Route 9, Newburgh. www.newburghvintageemporium.com/outdoormarket

209 Chip

209 Flea is brand new this season. While long-established flea markets provide a sense of familiarity, in that you get to know the vendors and can head straight to your favorites, newer flea markets allow for that element of surprise. Sometimes it takes a while for new flea markets to develop, so it’s always fun to stop in throughout the season to see what’s new and different.

Le 209 Brocante will be open every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located at Route 209 and at the corner of Samsonville Road in Kerhonkson. www.209flea.com

Stormville Airport Flea Market

The Stormville airport flea market is the largest by about a mile, which means they probably have a real mile more tables. There are several hundred tables of new items ranging from music to socks to jewelry and more. There is also an exclusive antiques section, also made up of hundreds of tables. You can get furniture, tools, old industry, pottery, etc.

If you can dream it, you can find it here. However, this could take hours and hours. You really need to prepare for this flea market. It can easily take an entire day to scan the tables.

The next flea market dates are July 9, September 3-4, October 8-9, and November 5. They also have a gigantic garage sale on June 18 and September 17. They are located at 428 Route 216, Stormville. www.stormvilleairportfleamarket.com
