Animation festival to be celebrated with industry talks and film screenings – Manila Bulletin

Industry veterans such as professional illustrators, graphic effects artists and comic book creators will share their inspiring creative journeys and exceptional works in the 7th installment on the theme of online connectivity of the Benilde Animation Festival ( BAF) 2021 online, from Friday July 2 to Saturday July 3, 2021.

The event serves as a virtual venue to impart knowledge and experience to industry fellows and students of the De La Salle College animation program in Saint Benilde.

The festival will also offer film screenings and competitions that will highlight and reward the flagship projects of promising apprentices. Each work radiates the philosophy of the program: finding a balance between commercial animation and artistic animation, thanks to the latest digital technologies.

In Working for Yourself and for a Boss, Raf De Leoz, Vancouver-based side effects artist and comic book creator, will reveal his strategies for self-publishing three comics and managing his time and energy for juggle studio work and passion projects. Co-founder and first president of Benilde Animotion, his portfolio includes Star vs the Forces of Evil, 7D, Enchantimals, Hatchimals and Starbeam.

DDB Group Artistic Director and Multimedia Artist in the Philippines, Margaux Janelle Chua, will relay her personal career advice in Authenticity in Creativity: My Art Journey. She will guide attendees through her adventures, ranging from working on award-winning campaigns for the Department of Tourism and PepsiCo to being an author-illustrator of children’s books for Robyn Rodriguez’s hit series Gail and Pablo.

Animator for Monstronauts will be presented by comic book artists and Wirdong Komiks creators Julia Presbitero, Hannah Villanueva and Maria Karenina “Nina” Gomez. The trio will provide a glimpse into their lives as designers for the local independent game company behind Potion Punch 2 and Sproutle. Julia has also worked on Penn Zero: Part Time Hero, Carmen Sandiego and the upcoming movie The Loud House; Hannah animated for Go Astroboy Go, Glitch Techs and Archibald’s Next Big Thing; and Nina returned her talent for Julius Jr., Jamie’s Got Tentacles
and Tom and Jerry.

Freelance motion designer, composer and visual effects artist Mark Cañega, who has hosted TV commercials and films for various local and international brands, will explain the importance of craftsmanship in his Animation in the Advertising Agency webinar.

Mark, known as the man behind Fernando Amorsolo’s viral animated paintings, will also discuss how balancing personal and client projects makes everyone a better artist.

In Button Clicker’s Guide to the Magic Realm of CG, James Manlangit, 3D generalist and WETA Digital Junior VAD artist, will reveal years of tips to perfect the discipline. It will immerse the public in the multiple dimensions of the discipline from television shows, advertisements and films.
